Secular critics of Christianity frequently complain that the Church is “obsessed” with sex. But the Church has very good reasons to focus so much attention on this area, because sexual immorality is the most powerful weapon that Satan and his human allies are using to separate men from our Savior.
The importance of sexual morality goes back to mankind’s very beginning in the Garden of Eden. The first commandments that we read in the Bible are for man to be fruitful and multiply for the purpose of exercising dominion over the earth, “And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth”(Genesis 1:28). In the next chapter we see a clearer definition of what the marriage relationship is to be like, “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh”(Genesis 2:24). Jesus uses this verse as part of his argument against divorce (Matthew 19:5-6), showing that from the very beginning monogamy was God’s design for mankind.
Marriage is one of the most important tools for exercising godly dominion upon the earth. Children born to faithful parents in lasting marriages are the backbone of a healthy civilization, and that is why the unrighteous are attacking the Biblical standard for sexual behavior with such fury. God has implanted the sex drive in us for the purpose of bearing children and forming life-long bonds with our spouses, but this passion has instead been diverted into selfish perversions. Satan and his allies will never stop inventing new forms of perversion.
Easily accessible pornography has become a scourge for both men and women. The over-stimulation provided by pornography is already leading to a preference for fantasy over reality, as heavy pornography users can experience sexual dysfunction when trying to engage with a real-life partner. This dangerous trend of preferring artificial sexual experiences is set to expand with the recent release of realistic and interactive sex robots. The use of these machines is being brought into the mainstream, and manufacturers are trying to make the practice seem normal and healthy.
Speaking about the sexbot model “Samantha”, engineer Sergi Santos says,
“Humans have many needs, some of them sexual, and there’s nothing embarrassing about using a sex robot to fulfill them.
“Because Samantha has ‘family mode’, it can also be integrated into the home. Children really like it, they don’t see it as a sexual object…
Perhaps most disturbingly, the robots are being programmed to make the users form emotional bonds with their machines. Santos continues:
“Emotional connections are the foundations of relationships and that’s what we are simulating.
“And it’s emotions which add the X Factor to sex. I think two people can meet in a bar, have sex the same night and not remember each other’s names and say, ‘Well that was fun’.
“But that’s different sex than when you actually get to know someone and you bond with them intellectually and emotionally.”
The robots are being designed to get to know, seduce and fall in love with their users. This will allow users to completely forgo any real romantic interaction. Just like our desire for physical union, our desire for an emotional romantic bond has been given to us by God for the purpose of forming real, lasting relationships. With the sexbot, users will be able to escape completely from any commitments or responsibilities to other people. There will be no need for any empathy, compromise or self-denial. Users will have completely one-sided and artificial emotional and physical relationships.
Another new avenue of sexual perversion is being developed by Professor Elizabeth Stephens at the University of California at Santa Cruz. The new perversion is known as “ecosexualism” and involves licking, fondling and masturbating with natural objects like grass, trees and mud. The goal of such behavior is to “make love to the earth” and raise awareness of environmental issues.
While ecosexualism will likely have less widespread appeal than the use of sexbots, both perversions continue to blur the line between human and non-human, and they both promote a totally self-centered and fantasy based “relationship” with an inanimate object.
In Biblical marriage, man and wife are both subject to God, and they are both bound to perform certain duties to each other. Biblical marriage always points beyond the desires of the individual to God’s greater purpose. This is something that the fallen, rebellious heart cannot bear.
In a recent article in the Washington Post sociologist Mark Regnerus argues that the current spread of unbelief is largely due to the erosion of sexual morality:
“We overestimate how effectively scientific arguments secularize people. It’s not science that’s secularizing Americans — it’s sex.”
The secular world view is not being embraced because of sophisticated intellectual arguments, it is being embraced because it gives you permission to fulfill all of your strongest sinful desires. In this world view the individual gets to define right and wrong.
The true consequences of sexual immorality, however, are quite clear. Our people are becoming increasingly fruitless and incapable of forming families. We are being invaded by more fertile foreigners who hate us and our civilization. And yet for all the horrors of this societal decay, it is all only a mild foretaste of the punishment that these perverts will face in eternity.
